About Our Program

Vision

BioStev is the first programme to unify AI-driven cultivation, human evaluation, and policy co-creation into a traceable and sustainable stevia ecosystem. Unlike fragmented efforts, it blends real-time agronomic data and digitized environments to create harmonized cultivation recipes that make stevia production viable and replicable across diverse EU settings and regional agritech maturity. It is the first stevia initiative to link cultivation with in-vitro and human studies to validate health claims, and establishes EU-first data-driven benchmarks for environmental and agronomic performance of stevia cultivation. It empowers agripreneurs with access to plug-and-play agronomic models, robust IP pathways, and commercialization support. In essence, BioStev positions stevia as a catalyst for systemic food innovation and transforms it from a niche import into a validated, EU-grown alternative that supports healthier diets, regional entrepreneurship, and food system resilience.

Vision

Who Will Benefit From BioStev?

BioStev targets a broad spectrum of beneficiaries include EU growers and agripreneurs—especially in RIS regions—who gain access to validated cultivation models, training, and market entry. Secondary beneficiaries include food manufacturers who benefit from a stable, traceable, and health-validated stevia supply to meet sugar-reduction goals. Consumers gain healthier, low-calorie options. Agritech providers expand AI-driven and CEA systems, while investors and policymakers access evidence-based models for resilient food systems. Challenge owners—public health bodies, regulators, and buyers—shape KPIs via an Advisory Board, ensuring relevance. Over 200 trainees–farmers, agripreneurs, and investors–will be equipped with replicable models. Feedback loops embedded in all work packages ensure co-creation with citizens, educators, and regional clusters—amplifying systemic impact across health, sustainability, and food sovereignty.

Benefits

BioStev's Systemic Approach

BioStev applies a systemic approach by addressing interlinked challenges—health, sustainability, and food sovereignty—across the full stevia value chain. It integrates AI-enabled cultivation, health validation, and policy co-creation to transform fragmented efforts into a unified, traceable, and sustainable ecosystem. The programme spans open-field and CEA systems, linking growers, researchers, buyers, and policymakers through co-developed KPIs and feedback loops. It embeds LCA, RCT, and CBA across trials to quantify impact, while training 200+ learners to replicate models in RIS and non-RIS regions. BioStev doesn't treat stevia merely as a high-value crop—it treats it as a lever for systemic change: reducing sugar-related NCDs, cutting pesticide use, and building EU-based supply chains. By aligning with EIT Food's Missions and Strategic Levers, BioStev demonstrates how innovation, education, and policy can converge to deliver measurable, scalable transformation across the food system.
